Scouts

I have just started a new project in the past few months that has brought me back to my past. I grew up in scouting. From summer camps to weekly meetings, I spent a major part of my adolescence in a uniform or out in the woods. As a young man it was an opportunity for me to be outside and engaged in something different and meaningful. I didn't spend time thinking about its politics or its many misgivings, I just grew up. Looking back on my experiences I am amazed at how calculated the program was. Each event, ceremony, and gathering was designed to create a certain culture.
This body of work begins to investigate the culture of scouting, specifically its interest in the Native American history, the military, and the necessity of wilderness skills.
